Chatbots are all the rage these days. From ordering pizza to booking flights and getting information about your favorite celebrities, chatbots can do it all. But how exactly do they work? And what makes them so popular? In this article, we’ll take you through everything there is to know how chatbots work and how they evolved – from the early days when they were mostly seen as toys or gimmicks by developers (and some marketers) to today’s world where bots dominate your lives.

What is a chatbot?

Wondering how chatbots work? Simply put, chatbots are computer programs that simulates human conversation. They can be used as a customer service representative or personal assistant, and it is often used in messaging apps.

A chatbot is not a real person, but it can still help you with your tasks. For example, if you have an appointment at the doctor’s office and need to reschedule it from work (or vice versa), you can use your preferred messaging app to interact with the chatbot instead of calling and waiting on hold for 20 minutes or more.

Chatbots 101: How do chatbots work?

In the simplest terms, a chatbot is a software that simulates human conversation. Chatbots are programmed to recognize specific keywords and phrases and then respond accordingly. They can be used in all sorts of ways:

  • Customer service automation
  • Sales automation
  • Business process automation (e.g., scheduling meetings)
  • Knowledge management

Why have chatbots become popular today?

You may be wondering why chatbots have become so popular. They do many things that people like, including being easy to set up and use. Chatbots are also useful for both business and personal tasks, ranging from ordering pizza to finding your new favorite hobby.

Chatbots are a great way for businesses to interact with customers because they ensure that customers can get help easily, whether it’s through phone calls or text messages. This is especially important when the customer was expecting something else from the business; if someone ordered an item online but didn’t receive their purchase in time for Christmas, then having access to a chatbot could help to save their holiday season.

How are chatbots evolving?

Chatbots have been around for quite some time, but they’re still in their infancy. They’ve started to gain ground in several different industries, but there are still many ways that chatbots can improve. As technology advances and new solutions are developed, we’ll continue to see the evolution of chatbots across different platforms and devices.

Here are some of the latest trends you should be aware of as you plan your business or personal chatbot projects:

Conversational UI (Conversation UI): This is an interface that allows users to interact through conversations rather than using buttons or icons on a screen. It uses natural language processing (NLP) technology to understand what the user wants from it and then provides an accurate response based on those inputs.

Voice Interfaces: These allow users who prefer speaking over typing their requests into text fields by using voice commands instead of text dictation software programs like Siri or Google Assistant. A good example would be Alexa from Amazon; she listens for commands when you say “Alexa” before responding appropriately.

You can choose between two types of chatbot

There are two main types of chatbots you can choose from:  rule-based and AI-powered.

Rule-based chatbots are easy to build, but they’re also inflexible, expensive, and limited in their understanding of user intent. AI-powered chatbots can be built more quickly than their rule-based cousins, but they’re more expensive and require more processing power and therefore more money to build and maintain. AI-powered chatbots also have the potential to learn from each interaction with a user and improve over time by responding more accurately to user input.

Conclusion

So there you have it. The basics of how chatbots work. As you can see, there are many different types but the most popular ones are rule-based and AI-powered. Which one should you choose? In a nutshell, if your business needs to provide more personalized service or has complex workflows then an AI-powered chatbot will be best suited for your needs. However, if cost is an issue or if you just don’t need all that extra functionality then a rule-based bot may be all that’s needed.
